implements a project co-financed from European Funds “Distributed Energy and Virtual Power Plant Management Systems using the Ice Storage Network.”
The aim of the project is to develop technologies that enable the storage of electricity in a network of distributed cold accumulators.
Project description and planned effects:
Storing electricity is currently one of the biggest challenges for power systems in the world. In the following years, a very high increase in the demand for this type of services is forecast, mainly due to the change in the model of electricity production from the classic one based on commercial power engineering to distributed systems based on unstable renewable energy sources.
Ensuring the stability of this type of system requires the search for new solutions to equalize the instantaneous values of demand and energy production. The project aims to develop technologies that enable the storage of electricity in a network of distributed cooling accumulators. The recovery of energy from heat into electricity will take place by reducing the demand for electricity – turning off cooling units in the period when they would normally have to work at full capacity.
For this purpose, an IT system will be developed that will create a virtual power plant based on a network of distributed cooling accumulators connected to cooling units. In order to achieve high efficiency of the virtual power plant constructed in this way, a globally innovative refrigeration device containing an innovative cold accumulator will be developed.
New design solutions of this device ensure effective operation and competitive cost of cold production. The proposed solution fits very well into the current market trends: it will allow for increasing the efficiency of electricity use by taking over the surplus energy of Renewable Energy Sources in the power grid and will enable mass supply of cold to individual and institutional customers at very competitive prices. The solution is a novelty on a global scale.
